ACHARYA BALKRISHNA
A charya Balkrishna (born 25 July, 1972), a multi-faceted personality, is a popular authority on Ayurveda and a renowned medicinal plant expert. He is a companion of Swami Ramdev who is known for Yoga Revolution in the
World and a founding pillar of Patanjali Yogpeeth and Divya Yoga Madir (Trust). He is a man who has uplifted the spiritual tradition of ancient saints.
A charya Balkrishna is a renowned scholar and a great guide under whose guidance and leadership Ayurvedic treatment and research has touched new dimensions. Indians regard Acharyaji as an empowerer of Ayurvedic system of medicine. His teachings, writings and research have helped the community to self-realize the importance of natural living and maintaining good health by incorporating Yoga and Ayurveda in their daily routine. Acharyaji’s famous Television program broadcasted on several channels has revived the interest of common people in use of plants for medicinal purposes and also the interest in Ayurveda, globally. His efforts have significantly contributed to the social, cultural, educational and economic aspects of India along with the establishment of remarkable standards in the domains of literature and therapy at a global level.
Biography
Trained and educated in the Gurukul tradition since early childhood, Revered Acharya Balkrishnaji Maharaj, a great man of action, is a versatile genius and a multi-faceted personality. He is a great visionary, highly ascetic, energetic, diligent and a simple man with multi-dimensional skills who is selflessly engaged in the service of mankind. Despite educated in the Gurukul tradition, revered Acharyaji has brilliance in the managerial, administrative and engineering fields. The leading personalities of the world look up to him for his valuable consultancy and advice. Famous magazines like “India Today” (Nov 2009) and “Outlook” (Jan 2010) counts him among the ten versatile and dynamic young men of India. He is a brilliant exponent of the eternal tradition of Ayurveda established by the great sages. At present the credit of propagating and re-establishing Ayurveda on the world map goes to him. In his supervision, about five thousand ‘Patanjali Chikitsalayas’ (clinics) and ‘Arogya kendras’ (health care center’s) are providing best treatment and free consultancy. Over one thousand vaidyas are trained under his guidance, and are providing their services at national and international level. He has directly treated more than five million patients suffering from various chronic to complex diseases. He is constantly engaged in preparing special formulations for immunological disorders like AIDS. Besides the in-depth knowledge of Ayurveda, he also has a good knowledge of medicinal plants. He is credited with the identification of various rare and endangered species of medicinal plants. He has an expertise and deep understanding of various subjects concerning Literature, Medicine, Yoga, Indian Philosophy, Vedas, Vedic culture, Upanishads and much more.
He is the man behind the operations of Patanjali Yogpeeth, an Institute of Medical Science and Research in Yoga and Ayurveda located in India, Nepal, the UK, the US, Canada and Mauritius. These International Centers are hot destination for all who are desirous of holistic healing and natural detox therapies. He is the chief architect of all the organizations under Patanjali Yogpeeth and Divya Yog Mandir (Trust). India’s largest food processing unit, ‘Patanjali Food and Herbal Park’ is the result of his innovative vision. He is the inspiration and designer behind the construction of highly modernized Divya Pharmacy and Patanjali Ayurveda Ltd. Patanjali Bio-Research Institute (PBRI) is also the materialization of his ideology that aims for the conservation of Nature and Environment; and to conduct research on the development of organic farming to keep the soil pollution-free. Establishment of world-class, well-organized, well-equipped Hospitals, Yog Bhavan, Laboratories and other huge infrastructures are examples of his visionary power and initiative.
Besides, he is the founder and patron of Patanjali University, Patanjali Ayurveda College, Acharyakulam Educational Institute and Vaidik Gurukulam. He is a compassionate man, filled with humanity and the zeal to serve the society. He actively participates in the disaster management programs to provide aids and relief to the victims. Patanjali Yogpeeth has actively provided assistance to Tsunami victims (2004). It emerged as the biggest NGO in the world to provide aid and relief to the flood victims in Bihar (2008) and in Uttarakhand (2013). It in recent Nepal earthquake he was actively involved relief and recuse work and his work was highly appreciated by various national and international agencies. Patanjali Yogpeeth established an orphanage ‘Patanjali Sevashram’, at Narayankoti, near Guptkashi (Uttarakhand) for the children victim of natural calamity, which took place in Uttarakhand in 2013 and an orphanage in the Nepal for Nepal’s earthquake victims. The children along with boarding and lodging are given free education and vocational training.
Under his guidance, the trust has also established a hospice, ‘Maharishi Valmiki Dharamshala’ near Patanjali Yogpeeth, for the poor people with free boarding & lodging facility, ‘Patanjali Mangal Nidhi’ a separate fund for marriages of the poor and orphan girls; rewarding the ayurvedists and agriculturalists under ‘Patanjali Ayurveda Gaurav’ and ‘Patanjali Krishi Gaurav’ for their remarkable contribution in the field of Ayurveda and Organic Agriculture. All these activities and his efforts contribute towards the preservation of traditional heritage of Yoga & Ayurveda; the conservation of medicinal plants, which are facing rapid exploitation these days; upliftment of the society, eradication of unemployment and motivate people towards natural living.
Positions:
At present, Acharya Balkrishna holds the following positions:
i) Vice Chancellor, University of Patanjali, Haridwar: The University offers Masters, Degree, Diploma courses in Ayurveda, Panchakarma, Yoga, Computer Science, and Ph.D in Yoga, Ayurveda, Vedic Sciences, Traditional medicine systems, Philosophy, Spirituality, Culture and traditions, World heritage, etc.
ii) General Secretary and Co-Founder, Divya Yog Mandir (Trust), Haridwar: The trust was established on 5th January, 1995 with the mission of social service. Currently, the trust is providing Ayurvedic services with an OPD, IPD and medicine sale counter. Various activities under the trust are:
a) Divya Pharmacy: A huge and modernized set-up of Divya Pharmacy is running under the trust with latest standards of quality like GMP, GLP, GPP, ISO, OHSAS on international level. It is one of the biggest Ayurvedic pharmaceutical units in the country. It manufactures high quality Ayurvedic medicines with a unique blend of ancient Ayurvedic wisdom and latest scientific techniques.
b) Divya Prakashan: An advanced publication unit, publishing standard books on Yoga, Ayurveda, herbs and medicinal plants, diseases and their natural remedies, spirituality, refinement, patriotism, philosophy, etc. in Hindi, English and other Indian languages.
c) Divya Yoga Sadhana: The manufacturing and distribution of audio-video visuals like DVD’s, MP-3, VCD’s cassettes in Hindi, English and other Indian languages, concerning Yoga therapies, Ayurveda, Sacred chants and religious music, Devotional and Patriotic songs, etc.
d) Divya Gaushala: Two gaushalas (cowsheds) have been constructed under the trust where high breed cows are reared to obtain valuable cow products used as medicine.
e) Divya Nursery: It deals with the conservation, production and sale of medicinal & aromatic, ornamental & fruit plants; and production & sale of organic manure (Vermi Compost/ Nedap).
f) Patanjali Ayurvedic College: There is a separate campus in the vicinity which runs the Patanjali Ayurveda College. It offers degree courses in Yoga & Ayurveda.
g) Patanjali Herbal Garden: Here, medicinal plants are grown and scientific research is conducted on these plants. About 450 medicinal plants are planted among which are also included rare and high altitude plants.
h) Other Facilities: Pathology & Radiology laborites, Ayurveda treatment facilities, Panchkarma and Shatkarma units, Ophthalmology department, ENT department, Dental department, Surgery department, Physiotherapy and Acupressure section and Medicine counter.
iii) General Secretary and Co-Founder, Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust, Haridwar: The trust was founded for the purpose of establishing Yoga and Ayurveda on the world map. The two units of Patanjali Yogpeeth Phase 1 and Phase 2 have good facilities for treating 500 OPD patients/day with accommodation facilities and Yoga research center equipped with latest machines and equipments. A huge air-conditioned auditorium to practice yoga, pranayama and meditation. There is also a net surfing center and a huge library containing literature on Yoga, Ayurveda and Botany. The campus also has a multi-stored canteen and 3.13 lakh sq. ft. area for more than 6000 yoga participants having facilities for lodging, boarding, training, 950 guest rooms, Yajnashala, 350 apartments and with lots of open space and garden for walking. There is herbal park nearby with a plantation of well-known medicinal plants.
a) Yog Gram: A separate unit for natural treatments, Yog Gram is also established for patient holistic treatment facilities in Naturopathy. The campus is built amidst serene beauty of nature and is equipped with modern amenities.
b) Acharyakulum: A residential educational institute imparting standard education with a blend of Vedic Gurukul learning and CBSE/NCERT curriculum along with modern educational techniques, and culminating good moral values in the children.
iv) General Secretary and Co-Founder, Patanjali Research Foundation: The Foundation is established for scientific research, particularly in the field of Yoga and Ayurveda. The evaluation of the effect of Yoga and meditation on the physiological functioning of the body is studied using present-day scientific methods, with an aim of using these traditional systems of healing to promote health and manage disease. Research foundation also undertake research in the areas of bio-medical studies, revitalizing & restoring ancient system of knowledge and synchronization between traditional and modern system of medicine, etc.
v) General Secretary and Co-Founder, Patanjali Gramodhyog Trust: This trust is established with the sole aim to eradicate poverty in the villages, women employment in the villages and to improve the standard of living through economic activities such as establishing Cow Science and Herbal Agriculture Research Institute at Uttarkashi, farming and cultivation practices. The aim and objective is to establish gramodhyog using the resources and men power available in the villages and to organize & manage the traditional knowledge, art and skills in villages to convert the same in an industry. The trust also works for disaster management and litigation programs, providing aid and relief to the victims. The trust undertook disaster mitigation activities such as distribution of medicine, food and blankets to the flood victims; implantation of solar lights, biogas plant, etc. Farmer clubs are formed to foster unity and cooperation of the villagers.
vi) Chairman and Managing Director, Patanjali Ayurved, Haridwar: Industrial units equipped with ultra-modern machinery to make the ancient, traditional and classical knowledge of Ayurveda to reach the common man in its pure form. The manufacturing units adhere to the latest quality standards like GMP, GLP, GPP, ISO, OHSAS on international level. Here, new researches merge with old traditions. The discoveries made by the ancient sages are presented with new research; keeping natural taste intact and providing maximum benefits.
vii) Managing Director, Patanjali Bio Research Institute, Haridwar: The institute is involved in developing techniques for organic farming through biotechnological applications. Implanting Biogas plant at a lesser cost for the benefit of farmers, developing Eco–friendly and farmer friendly Bio-fertilizers. Good laboratory facilities are available for testing the quality of fertilizers.
viii) Chief Editor of Yog Sandesh: A monthly journal containing articles on Yoga, Ayurveda, Culture, Refinement and Spirituality. It is published in 14 languages – Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi, Oriya, Assamese, Tamil, Telugu, Malyalama, Kannada, Nepali and Urdu across the country and also in 25 other countries. It has a monthly readership of more than a million of people in India and abroad.
ix) Managing Director, Vedic Broadcasting Ltd.: Under the Vedic Broadcasting, Astha Channel is propagating Indian culture and heritage, Health, Ayurveda, Education, Yoga, Values and Morals, Devotional songs, Spiritual meetings, talks, etc. It is purely a non-commercial channel. It also has branch centers in various countries like USA, UK, etc.
x) Managing Director, Patanjali Food and Herbal Park, Padartha, Haridwar: It is India’s first and largest food park having world class machineries for production of food products. It is the biggest Food and Herbal Park in the world, established under the Government scheme in co-operation with Ministry of Food Processing Industry. It produces more than 100 different food and herbal products with a capacity of about 200 tons of production/day of fruit juices, and other herbal drinks, sherbets, etc. along with other herbal products such as Ayurvedic medicines, edibles, etc. This Food Park helps the laborers and farmer’s dependent on farmlands and barns to get fair price for their products and on the other hand, people would get benefit of harmless and healthy products.
All his efforts are meant for the upliftment of the society and for the improvement of the social strata and economic status of the villagers and helpless people. All these organizations provide good employment chances for the unemployed people of the region.
Medicinal Plants Expertize
Acharya Balkrishna has in his name, claim of reporting and identifying rare and endangered medicinal plants from the foothills of Himalayas. He is credited to identify and report the following from the Uttarakhand region:
1. Sanjeevani, the herb of immortality: Two plant species Saussurea gossypiphora D.Don and Pleurospermum condolii Benth. ex. C.B. Clarke were identified and reported by him at a height of nearly 15,000 feet in Dronagiri hills. (The Times of India, Allahabad Ed., Friday, 19 December, 2008; Dainik Jagran, Haridwar Ed., 28 & 29 September, 2008; Hindustan, Dehradun Ed., Sunday, 28 September, 2008; and Amar Ujala, Dehradun Ed., 28 & 29 September, 2008 and Friday, 20 February 2009)
2. Ashtavarga, the herbs of immortality: Nearly extinct and endangered herbs of ashtavarga group were identified and a very rare and new variety of ashtavarga herb, meda (Polygonatum verticillatum var. rubrum (L.) All. was reported by him. These herbs were found at a height of nearly 6,000 feet from the hills of Mussourie, Dhanaulti and Chamba (Uttarakhand) and Shimla (Himachal Pradesh).
3. Soma, a vitality enhancing herb: Another rare plant, Ephedra major Host was identified and reported by him. (Hindustan, Dehradun Ed., Tuesday, 17 December, 2013; Dainik Jagran, Dehradun Ed., Tuesday, 17 December, 2013; Dainik Janwani, Dehradun Ed., Tuesday, 17 December, 2013; Punjab Kesari, Wednesday, 18 December, 2013; and Amar Ujala, Dehradun Ed., Wednesday, 18 December, 2013)
4. Telia Kand, a divine herb, Sauromatum venosum (Dryland. Ex Aiton)Kunth; Swarnakshiri (Euphorbia thomsoniana Boiss.); and Swarnadraka (Zingiber chrysanthum Roscoe) were also reported and identified by him from the Uttarakhand region.

Acharya Balkrishna has received innumerous awards, honors, shields and certificates for his contributions in the field of Yoga &Ayurveda, both as a doctor and medicinal plant expert in identification and analysis of the plant species and its usage in the treatment of various diseases. 1. Felicitation by the former President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam at Rashtrapati Bhavan during a Yoga camp on 23rd October, 2004.
2. An honor and shield by the Academy of Ayurvedic Doctors in India, Kolkata for his contribution towards Ayurvedic Medical Science, in July 2006.

2. Vitality Strengthening Ashtavarga Plants (For Vitality and Anti-aging) & Ashtavarga Rahasya: Ashtavarga is a name of a group of eight vitality promoting and anti-aging drugs mentioned in Ayurveda. The book was published in 2005 (both in Hindi and English) and co-authored with Prof. B.D. Sharma, former Principal Scientist & Head National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources. This book deals with Ayurvedic aspects of plants with genetic approach that gives strength and vitality to the human beings. 4. Aushadh Darshan: A famous scripture on Ayurvedic treatment ‘Aushad Darshan‘ (2007) is a unique creation and a popular book by him. It is published in 14 different languages having circulation of more than 10 million copies. The revised version of this masterpiece work was released in February 2014, and is now available with new updates. It exhibits the miraculous effects of the classical Ayurvedic medicines and the medicines self-formulated by the author, for the treatment of simple to complex and chronic disorders. The new edition also emphasis on the good and healthy dietary habits and lifestyle.
5. Ayurved – It’s Principles and Philosophies (English) & Ayurveda Siddhanta Rahasya (Hindi) (Second edition, 2007): The book provides basic information on Ayurveda in a precise manner and easy language. The book describes the basic principles of Ayurveda in such a manner that a common man can learn to lead a natural and healthy lifestyle in a disciplined manner as quoted by the ancient sages in their comprehensive works. It describes the use of plants as drugs, correct diet and lifestyle for healthy living, the basic do’s and don’ts in terms of food, living, conduct and other aspects of life. The book is now available in more than 40 languages.
6. Yog in Synergy with Medical Science (English) & Vigyan ki Kasauti pe Yog (Hindi): This book published in both Hindi and English (2007) is a treatise on Yoga based on scientific research.
This book speaks about the synergy between Yoga and medical science. It emphasis on the effect of Yoga, Pranayama and Meditation on the physiological functioning of the body. The book explains Yoga on the parameters of modern medical science with all scientific facts and evidences.

Secrets of Indian Herbs for Healthy Living (English) and Jadi Buti Rahasya (Hindi): This book published in both Hindi and English (2008) is a very useful book, highly acclaimed and appreciated by the general public. The book contains the secrets of 500 medicinal plants along with treatment methodology for more than 700 ailments or diseases. The book provides specific description of classical medicinal uses, self-experienced uses and traditional uses of plants. The book not only benefitted people with good health but also developed awareness among the common mass for the use of herb-based medicine and for the conservation of medicinal plants, for their incredible utility as medicine. On public demand, more volumes are under publication with incorporation of new plants and additional information. However, the Hindi edition of the book has been released in three volumes in February, 2014 in an International Conference and Ayurvedic Summit organized by AYUSH Dept. at Cochin. New English edition is under publication.

8. The Four Vedas: Vedas means ‘knowledge’, and they are the religious and ancient-most scriptures of the world. They are the oldest writings on the surface of the earth and contain all philosophies of life. They contain knowledge on all aspects of life from evolution, religion, culture, custom, tradition, science, arts and all domains. There are four Vedas viz. Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yagur Veda and Atharva Veda. These four Vedas have been edited and published in its original form (Sanskrit) by Acharya Balkrishna for the awakening of lost Vedic culture in the modernized society.

Books on Yoga Education: For the first time in the history of Yogic world, Yoga activities are brought out in a simple, lucid and easy to understand booklets and Yoga manuals to become a part of school curriculum (from class I to VI) for the children, teachers, common man and for the public in general. The books were released in a series in both Hindi and English in 2010 with the concept of establishing Yogic Science in Education. Now this series is published in various different languages like Assamese, Gujarati, Oriya, Marathi, Punjabi and Nepali. This is altogether a new concept where these syllabus books and modules on Yoga are designed keeping in mind the module prescribed by WHO and NCERT.

Publication of Unpublished Ancient Sanskrit Manuscripts and Texts: Ayurvedic medicine system in spite being ancient is very scientific. Not only in India, throughout the world there are various libraries and many organizations where several manuscripts are available, which are very useful for mankind, yet not published till date. For this, great effort has been made by Acharya Balkrishna to publish the ancient handwritten manuscripts for the re-establishment of Ayurvedic tradition and its lost knowledge. The edition and simple Hindi translation and explanation of these complex Sanskrit manuscripts have been skillfully and efficiently performed under the publication scheme of ‘Patanjali University’. From these manuals six books have been published till date. They are:

A biggest dream project of the author, ‘World Herbal Encyclopedia’ expected shortly
World Herbal Encyclopedia: The book is under publication, expected by 2020. The “World Herbal Encyclopedia” is a unique endeavor to gather the scattered knowledge of all medicinal plants and their widespread usages at one place. It is a multi-voluminous, exhaustive collection of all medicinal plants used in different traditional medicinal systems across the globe. The book unfolds almost all known unknown medicinal plants of the world which were earlier unavailable in any text at one place and can be scientifically explored for various illnesses in the future. These plants have been explained elaborately from the point of view of traditional uses and their classical illustrations to modern scientific experiments. This unique work brings forth the productive and appropriate treatment methodology for simple to severe diseases known from antiquity till date. This book depicts 5.5 million vernacular names and numerous synonymous names of nearly 60,000 medicinal plants of the world in 225 languages spoken across the globe. Besides, all the common names of the plants known in different regions of the world, and more than 13,000 Sanskrit names of 900 medicinal plants found in ancient Ayurvedic published texts and unpublished manuscripts are also compiled here. Most interestingly, it is the first treatise where around 60,000 medicinal plants of the world are given entirely new Sanskrit nomenclature from family up to genus and species level, describing the base of origin of nomenclature in scientific terms. The book also describes about the origin of names of different families and genus. Along with, the book includes external features (morphology) of the plants, pharmacological studies, chemical constitutions, medicinal properties of plants, toxicological effect and various medicinal uses which are popular across the world along with the modern researches in the respective areas. Consequently, it will be easy to identify any plant as well as to know about its appearance and properties. It is a unique blend of traditional herbalism with evidence-based research and modern uses. This is a first book on medical herbalism that describes all groups of plant kingdom including medicinal fresh water and sea plants (algae), fungi, lichens, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms.
